Do you know what your last name means and where it comes from . . .?
by Justahuman24 ini have always been interested in what last names mean and where they come from and if someone famous in the past is related to us because of the same last name.
my last name comes from greek but my family is not greek.
it dates back to the year 700ce and it was around the time in europe when people were starting to get last names - i'm talking about the general people not monarchs.

What is your take on birthdays?
by honest inhi i am still yet to introduce myself, but i will soon i promise!!
i am a very open minded jw and currently have not been happy with their techings on alot of subjects.
one issue i have is birthdays, i do not agree with their techings on this subject, i never have.

Birthdays are time to have fun, enjoy yourself and your loved one, and to celebrate what's good about life.
Jehovah's Witnesses teach none of the above; they have enormous difficulty seeing what's good about life.
Someone said that they're just another "made up holiday."
Well, all holidays are just made up. So are dumb rules about not celebrating them.
I don't think one should be oppressed by either the holidays or by dumb rules made up by a dumb cult.
Just celebrate if it pleases you. It's not that bohemian. Enjoy!

by Sparkplug inbut really, i went to the store today and was spending my last few bucks till friday buying eggs and taters.
i found a freaking slim slice of meat at a reasonable price and some frozen veggies.. so i check out and think...hah, i made it with 10 dollars left.

I always feel sad for people like that on the street. Sometimes I give them money, even though I know they might use it for booze instead of food; but, I never know. I don't have to walk in their shoes (or bare feet).
I just think about what if it were me or my daughter or someone I loved who went crazy one day and just got lost in the world. I know I feel lost in the world sometimes myself, but at least I have a place to live, a job (even if it does suck sometimes) and a few bucks here and there.
I feel sorry for myself plenty, too, Sparkplug. I was just bitching tonight that my last 5 bucks is going into the empty gas tank (again) and wondering if I'll ever have any money to buy myself something for a change (other than the bare necessities). Well, at least I usually have that much!
I see a lot of street people in this town; there's a lot of wealth here, but there's plenty of poverty, too. It's hard to see how there can be such extremes.
You do what you can, and when you can't do anything, you just have to wait til you can help somebody next time. It helps keep things in perspective to remember there are people we can help, even if it's just a buck or two once in a while . . .

JWs: Saying One Thing But Doing Another
by minimus injws say to do research in society publications and the bible but when you do research and see something that doesn't make sense that is being taught, and you question it----you are told not to research and leave things in jehovah's hands so that he can help you to understand things according to his will.
if you research or even read an older publication printed by "the slave", and you express that there is a different thought or viewpoint or even a "flip-flop" in understanding, you will be counseled to keep such observations to yourself.. have you seen examples of jws telling you to do one thing but in reality doing just the opposite?.

My younger sister who is still a jw imploringly told me a few years back that if only I would open my mind and research it, I would be sure to come to the same conclusions she did - that it was the truth.
It was really hard not to roll my eyes at her, thinking about the depth of her "research," which I know full well involved reading Watchtower literature and parroting everything it says. Been there, done that.
I wish there was a word for the exact opposite of research. Whatever that word is, that's exactly what she did. Saying one thing, doing another. Plagiarism is almost the word, but not quite right . . . hmmm . . . now where's that thesaurus?

Sorry if I seemed flippant to your question earlier, minimus; I was in a hurry to get off to work, after once again procrastinating at this board half the day.
Anyhoo, you asked,"Have you seen examples of JWs telling you to do one thing but in reality doing just the opposite?"
I mistakenly replied, ". . . everyone at this board" because I did not read the question carefully. I did not mean to insult "everyone at this board."
What I meant is that most everyone here is or was questioning the Society, something it condemns and that is how many of us simply decided it wasn't the truth - by doing the initially hypocritical/disallowed thing - questioning.
I did not realize your question referred to the hypocrisy of the Watchtower policies. Some very good points are made here, btw, esp. re. the blood fractions issue. That is such a crazy crock of u know what.

A beast with 666 tatooed on its forehead and the hot little dame riding on his back. They would make great entertainers, I suspect. Isn't the dame a drinker? Those are my kind of neighbors.
